| The money is under the bog "W".. under the big "W".. was the clue given by Smiler Grogan given to the great guy and gal comedians in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World" by Stanley Kramer in 1963, www.madmadmadmadworld.com. They were all after $350,000 in cash, but here in Lee County, Florida, our southwest loot is another big "W"... Water. Our growing local population of over one million people (toss in Collier and Charlotte counties as our neighbors) depends on the big W for many life substaining and recreational needs. Drinking, bathing, cleaning, lawn and golf course maintenance, swimming, and of course other recreations make the big W a giant "must have here" constant. Where do we get it? Do we have enough? What happens if we run out? These are mad, mad..questions for us. Some of our sources come from 700 or more feet below the surface, and the permits, allowing our costal folks use, will expire. Cape Coral's givernment is proposing doubling its water rate over the next five years. Collier County used more brackish water in Feb., 2009 than fresh water from wells to provide clean drinking water. Our South Florida Water Management District www.sfwmd.gov, and the Army Corps of Engineers, www.usace.mil, must balance their environmental and safety concerns versus those of a demanding public and sometimes hungry developers. Lee County Comissioners wer eupset by the Corps refusing to release anymore water from Lake Okeechobbee into the Caloosahatchee River. The best bet for our future is the big 'W" is going to get more expensive. |
