Two local real estate brokers gave therir views on our Lee County, Florida market place last night at the News-Press Market Watch, www.news-press.com,  and although most current numbers for our recovery remain harsh, there was reason to be hopeful here in the 2008 foreclosure capital of the U.S. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, in 1854, wrote the Charge of the Light Brigade, www.nationacenter.org/ChargeoftheLightBrigade, which was a ode to a suicidal charge of cavarly over open terrain. Part of the poem, "Cannons to the right of them, Cannons to the left of them, cannons in front of them......Into the jaws of Death,  Into the mouth of Hell, rode the six hundred. Many of us know about this war because of Florence Nightingale, and her then innovative measures to treat the wounded over 150 years ago. Is there a Florence Nightingale for our local real estate market???

Expansion of our diversity in employment opportunites, continual improvement in quality of public education, maintaining a clean water supply, and absorbing over supply of real estate will manifest into a rebuilt local economy, attracting higher paying jobs, new start-up firms, and allow for enjoyment of all our special attractions here in southwest Florida. Bulding permitsd have dropped from a high of 22,200 in 2005 to only 1211 in 2008(www.lee-county.com), exisiting sales of single family homes increased from 5920 in 2007 to over 10,500 in 2008 (aided by swarm of foreclosures and short sales). We are close to a 50 % drop in prices in Lee County from 4th quarter of 2007 to 4th quarter of 2008. Charlotte County about a 38% drop. These numbers exceed the drops in Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Francisco, all in the mid 30's %.

Once again, we have many visitors here for our great weather (80's), spring baseball training, (Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins here and Tampa Bay Rays in Charlotte), superb golf courses, pristine beaches, social and church groups, arts and crafts, and the opportunity to buy real estate at values many felt would never occur. Vacation and second homes make great financial sense. First time buyers get an eight thousand dollar tax credit. Mortgage rates are under 5%. There are many affordable choices. Let's get our mojo moving.
